AUTUMN BROWNE POLITICAL SCRAPBOOK

Election 2000
STATE ASSEMBLY
DUTIES: Write bills and cast votes in committees and on the floor of the full house. Attend to needs of constituents relating to state government. Term of office: Two years. Limit of three terms. Salary and perquisites: $99,000 a year; full medical coverage; $121 per diem for living expenses when Legislature in session; leased car.
Map of Assembly districtsBACKGROUND: Democrats gained five Assembly seats in the 1998 election, including the 69th District in Orange County, where Lou Correa defeated incumbent Jim Morrissey. Democrats now have a 47-32 advantage. Republicans would like to take back Correa's seat in November, but first come two lively GOP primaries in districts where the incumbent is stepping down and a large voter-registration advantage makes the Republican nominee likely to win in the fall.

The 67th District race pits establishment Republican Jim Righeimer against Huntington Beach Councilman Tom Harman. The 72nd District candidates are Don Bankhead, Lynn Daucher and Bruce Matthias. Harman and Daucher are backed by Republicans who say they want the county party to take a less-conservative position on social issues.

CANDIDATE What experience and leadership skills make you the best person for the job? Should the state intervene in the El Toro debate? How do you plan to vote on these four ballot measures and a state Senate bill that would block the Foothill Toll Road extension through San Onofre State Beach?
67TH DISTRICT District includes Cypress, Huntington Beach, Los Alamitos, Rossmoor, and Seal Beach. Most of Fountain Valley and La Palma. Parts of Anaheim, Buena Park, Garden Grove, Stanton and Westminster.

No. I don't believe in state government getting involved in community affairs. I think the county should sell it to private buyers and then the buyers can do what they please. Tax dollars should not be used for the development of the land.
