"It is inaccurate to say I hate everything.  I am strongly in favor of common sense, common honesty, and common decency.  This makes me forever ineligible for any public office."

Occupation: Brookhurst Junior High School drama teacher
Resident: Westminster
Family: Single, divorced
Civic Activity: Former board member and current financial committee member, Greater Long Beach Girl Scout Council; PTSA teacher representative

Above all, I have 240 students every single day I provide leadership to, helping guide them to make better decisions for themselves... I'm able to read people. When I worked as a tour guide I had 40 people on a bus I was responsible for. Making sure they had a good time, got their money's worth, kept in order... With Girl Scouts I lead a financial committee, hearing all voices then deciding the best course of action. I can communicate, and it's so important to express yourself well -- to your students, your boss or your nation. > Extending the school year to a minimum of 180 days: Let local districts decide.
> Bilingual education: I believe in immersion.
> Awarding scholarship vouchers to help K-12 students attend private schools: Supports privatizing public schools.
> Lifting the cap limiting the number of charter schools: Supports.
> Requiring regular competency testing for teachers: Supports.
> Holding students back if they fail standardized tests: Supports.
> Cutting taxes for businesses and individuals by 5 percent: Supports

> Expanding the state's assault weapons ban to cover more guns: Opposes.
> Ending prenatal care for illegal immigrants: Supports
> Requiring HMOs/health plans to pay for second opinions: I don't think HMOs should be required by the government to do anything.
> Allowing patients to seek an independent review of their case when HMOs/health plans deny care: Supports.
> Holding HMOs/health plan medical directors who make decisions on denial of care to the same medical standards that apply to treating physicians: Government should stay out of it.
> Allowing injured patients to sue HMOs/health plans for malpractice: Supports.

THREE RESIDENTS ENTER STATE ASSEMBLY RACES

Several residents have announced their candidacies for the state primary in June.

Resident Autumn Browne is the unchallenged Libertarian candidate in the 67th Assembly District race. Browne is a teacher at Brookhurst Junior High School. Browne said she supports less government in the education system, an abolishment of income tax and other federally funded programs, which, she says, foster dependency on the government.

"I believe it's important to be active in the community in order to make social changes that benefit the community," she said.

The seat is now held by Republican Assemblyman Scott Baugh, who is running for reelection.

AUTUMN BROWNE

A Brookhurst Junior High School drama teacher who lives in Westminster, Browne, 40, is the lone Libertarian candidate. She has worked as a commercial actress, a stand-up comedienne, a Virginia Slims model and a campaign fund-raiser for her father's 1996 presidential run. Browne's focus is on extracting government from daily life. Decisions with local impact should be made locally, she said.

"The federal government must get completely out of education. It has no constitutional authority to meddle anyway," she said. "Federal taxes must be lowered dramatically so that parents have the ability to finance their children's education directly."

This race is about: "People are interested in education issues, and the fact that (Baugh) is actually running again, too. I think Clinton has heightened awareness of things like that."
